AWC Supports a Bright Idea!

On February 5th, 2008, members of the AWC board attended Digital Rochester's A Bright Idea! Contest to award one lucky student with a $750 scholarship. Their student winner was Sunwoo Lee - an RIT sophmore who did his presentation on Piezoelectricity.

AWC President, Renee Davias, summed up the decision -

"[We] were impressed with
Sunwoo’s passion and genuine desire to use this technology to help the world reduce its dependence on fossil fuels. As you read in his description, this technology is used today in watches. Why not use it to harness the energy created by people walking on sidewalks? Could NYC capture enough electricity to power its streetlights by replacing one section of sidewalk on each block with a piezoelectric platform? The simplicity of his idea and the fact that it is realistic made the decision easy for us."
